A new muslin cloth feels flat before its first wash, almost papery. That’s normal, because production finish still sits in the weave. The first wash releases it, and only then does the fabric show how soft it actually becomes.
The first wash
Wash muslin separately before first use, not for colour, but so the weave can move freely and shrink evenly. One cycle is enough; a second wash softens it further if you want that from the start.

Temperature & detergent
30–40 °C on a gentle cycle, with a mild liquid detergent without optical brighteners. Fabric softener works against you here: it coats the fibres and closes off exactly the openness that makes muslin breathe. Bleach doesn’t belong in the drum either, because it weakens the fibres over time.
Drying, ironing, storage
Line dry or lay flat; a dryer on low heat works but tends to leave the fabric fluffy-matte rather than silky-soft. Ironing isn’t necessary, because a slight crease is part of the material’s character and smooths out with use. For storage, loose folding in a dry place is enough; tight compression over time flattens the fibres.

FAQ
Does muslin shrink when washed?
A little, mostly on the first wash, usually one to three percent. After that the size stays stable.
Do I need to iron muslin?
No. The open weave smooths itself out as it dries; a slight crease is part of the material.
How often can I wash muslin without damaging it?
As often as you need to. Each gentle wash makes the weave softer, not thinner.
